What does NZEI do? What does District Council do?
 
NZEI is a member driven organisation. Its structure is detailed below. You can see where District Councils fit into this structure and what the Councils do.
 

Members

A member of NZEI Te Riu Roa can be
  • a teacher in the primary sector (Year 0-8) of a state or integrated school
  • an early childhood teacher or educator
  • employees in schools, educational institutions or agencies who support administration, teachers or students in the state education sector
  • primary and early childhood student teachers

Work Site

Schools, Kindergartens, Kohanga Reo, Kura Kaupapa, Advisory and Specialist Education offices
 

Branches

A group of members from different work sites can form a branch, where members can come together to:
  • discuss issues
  • support each other
  • socialize
  • work together to achieve NZEI goals
Aronui Tomua - a branch of members who identify with te miro Maori
Komiti Pasefika - a branch of members who identify with Pacific issues and education
There are currently 119 branches in NZEI.

Networks

Members from one or more branches, who have a common interest or issue, can form a network, to come together and work on group issues. Examples of current networks are:
  • Men
  • Women
  • Support Staff
  • Early Childhood
  • Principals
  • Specialist Education
  • Rainbow
District Councils Twelve regional bodies made up of representatives from branches, networks and National Executive.
District Councils are forums to:
  • share news and issues between branches, networks and other groups and organizations involved in education
  • communicate with the Ministry of Education, ERO etc about matters affecting members in their district
  • provide feedback to its Regional Office and National Executive on issues and matters raised
  • provide representation on committees within their district, as appropriate
  • plan and run events in their region

Regional Offices

There are three regional offices of NZEI based in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

National Executive

NZEI members who direct the policy of NZEI, supported and advised by specialist NZEI staff
Te Reo Areare is the national body with responsibility for Maori members, education and issues.

Annual Meeting

National Executive members are elected at Annual Meeting - the highest authority of NZEI.
Annual Meeting also decides NZEI policy and rules.
Hui-a-tau is the annual meeting for determining policy on Maori issues and organising miro Maori.

NZEI

The New Zealand Educational Institute, our national body. National office is located in Education House in Willis St, Wellington.

What does NZEI do for members?

Some of the things your union does for you:

  • negotiates employment agreements
  • provides member support through Membership Support Personnel
  • provides member support through a Field Officer service
  • provides industrial and legal advice and assistance
  • provides educational programmes for members on industrial, employment and professional issues
  • conducts research and provides access to information on educational issues
  • operates a member's benefit scheme including travel discounts, health and travel insurance
  • has a provident fund for emergency financial assistance and a death benefit
  • plays an active role in developing national educational policies
  • operates holiday units in Rotorua, for members' use
  • provides opportunities for members to meet, discuss and take active roles in issues relating to education and their employment
  • offers study opportunities to members
  • keeps members informed about current and future developments in education nationally and internationally
  • promotes action on educational or industrial issues

What does the Waitaha Canterbury District Council do?
  • The WCDC meets 3 or 4 times a year. Some of the things we do:
  • Representatives from all our branches, networks, Regional Office and National Executive come together to hear and share what has, is and will be happening locally and nationally.
  • We have guest speakers from groups like ERO, Ministry of Education, PPTA, National Office...
  • We have representatives on many committees and organisations connected to education in our region.
  • We help with training and education of members in our area.
  • We support the organisation and promotion of activities that support NZEI's priorities and goals.
  • We communicate ideas, issues, concerns etc within our area to National Office.
  • We assist District Council reps to attend relevant meetings.
